Furnace Filter Glossary (D - H)

The following are definitions for common terms related to furnace filters.

A - C  |   D - H  |   I - Z

Decontamination

The removal of unwanted substances from personnel, rooms, building surfaces, equipment, etc.

Dispersion

The most general term to define the scattering of particulate matter suspended in air or other gases.

Downflow Furnace

A furnace that intakes air at its top and discharges air at its bottom.

Ductwork

A pipe or conduit through which air is delivered. Ducts are typically made of metal, fiberboard or a flexible material. In a home comfort system, the size and application of ductwork is critical to performance and is as important as the equipment.

Dust

An aerosol of particles of any solid material, usually with particulate size of less than 100 microns.

Efficiency

The ability of a device to remove particulate or gaseous material from an airstream by measuring the concentration of the material upstream and downstream of the device.

Fan

Any device that creates air currents.

Filter

Any device that removes impurities through a straining process.

Filter Housing

A device used to hold a filter.

Furnace

That part of the heating system in which the combustion of fossil fuel and transfer of heat occurs.

HEPA

Abbreviation for High Efficiency Particulate Air, see also HEPA Filter.

HEPA Filter

A throwaway, extended-medium, dry-type filter in a rigid frame, having a minimum particle-collection efficiency of 99.97% (that is, a maximum particle penetration of 0.03%) for 0.3µm particles.

HVAC

Abbreviation for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning.
